Recently, I catered for a birthday party. Needless to say I was in my kind of heaven cooking up a storm, and Shane was in his kind of hell with the chaos and mess I managed to accumulate in the kitchen in a matter of hours… The occasion was a relaxed one that required salads and few snacks. One of the salads I offered up was my Mom’s coleslaw.

Coleslaw is perfect for braais, light meals and to accompany chicken or fish meals. I’m yet to meet someone that doesn’t like our family winning coleslaw concoction. Let me give you a hint, the secret ingredient in my opinion is a dash of garlic!

Give this simple side a try and see how the crowds love it!

¼ Large green cabbage, thinly sliced
2 -3 Carrots, peeled and grated
4 – 5 (heaped) Tbsp Cross & Blackwell Mayo
¼ Cup Seedless raisins (optional)
½ Cup Cheese, grated (optional)
1 tsp garlic
Salt & pepper

  • Once the cabbage is thinly sliced, the carrots grated, mix together in a bowl to ensure evenly mixed.
  • Add the mayonnaise, mix well.
  • Add the raisins and grated cheese, mix well.
  • Add the mayonnaise, mix well.
  • Add salt & pepper for taste.
